Mount Nittany Health is pleased to announce that James Martin, MD, Mount Nittany Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, was recently named one of Centre County Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024 Inductees.

Dr. Martin’s dedication to sports began when he was in high school in Danville, Pa., and continued through college where he was an elite student athlete at Penn State. As an undergraduate, he was the 1988 NCAA Wrestling National Champion, a four-time wrestling All-American, and he was honored as the top male athlete in the country for two consecutive years. Dr. Martin is still the leader in career wrestling wins at Penn State with a total of 155 wins from 1986-1989.

Dr. Martin credits his wrestling experience with shaping his view of the musculoskeletal system, its capabilities, and ability to regenerate.

"It's amazing to see how Dr. Martin has leveraged his elite wrestling experience into his work as an orthopedic surgeon," said Christopher Hester, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Mount Nittany Physician Group. "He is a dedicated orthopedics and sports medicine professional who is committed to providing his patients high-quality, compassionate care."

Dr. Martin earned a bachelor of science in pre-medicine at Penn State and a medical doctorate from the Penn State College of Medicine. He completed an orthopedic residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala. At the Institute, Dr. Martin worked with national experts to improve the understanding, prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries through research and education.

"With his decorated wrestling accomplishments at Penn State, Dr. Martin has a deep connection to the Centre Region," said Kathleen Rhine, President and CEO, Mount Nittany Health. "This is what makes Mount Nittany Health unique; our providers and staff have such strong ties to the community and are living examples of our mission of 'Healthier people, stronger community."

Mount Nittany Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine offers complete orthopedic care, ranging from surgical and non-surgical treatment options individualized to each patient. The orthopedics and sports medicine team prioritizes patients' well-being with comprehensive care for musculoskeletal injuries and conditions related to sports or physical activity.
