Most cancer centers are located in densely populated areas, leaving rural areas vastly underserved by the latest technologies and clinical research trials. Unique to Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute is its network of medical institutions that serve rural areas in central Pennsylvania, a region that encompasses 27 counties.

The Institute was established in 2000 by founding members Mount Nittany Medical Center, Lehigh Valley Hospital, The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Together, more than 5,800 new cancer patients are treated through the Institute's facilities yearly — more than at any other cancer center in Pennsylvania.

Our progressive Cancer Program, innovative treatment therapies and advanced technologies have also made us a regional leader in excellent patient-focused care.

Since 1989, Mount Nittany Medical Center's comprehensive Cancer Program has attained the highest recognition possible: designation as a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons.
