Families in our region expecting a new bundle of joy won’t have to look far when choosing a maternity hospital. Mount Nittany Medical Center was recently named one of the “Best Places for Maternity” by U.S. News and World Report. This recognition is based on a review of 2,700 hospitals across the nation. High performing hospitals had fewer newborn complications, fewer early deliveries and fewer C-sections compared with other hospitals.

“Mount Nittany Health is proud to receive this recognition which is a testament to our commitment to quality care,” says Tiffany Cabbibo, Executive Vice President, Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, Mount Nittany Health. “The medical center staff in the Women and Children’s Services unit demonstrate highly skilled and compassionate care for patients and families and we are honored to serve these families and be a part of welcoming a new baby.”

U.S. News and World Report focuses on five key elements of care when evaluating hospitals - scheduled early deliveries, C-section rates in low-risk women, newborn complications, rate of exclusive breast milk feeding, and the option for vaginal births after a C-section.

The Medical Center welcomes nearly 1,300 babies annually and has three dedicated pediatric hospitalists on staff.

"Our Women and Children's Services Unit is a critical part of how we serve the community," shares Jessica Lewis, RN, Manager, Women and Children's Services unit. “We are proud of the care our providers and staff give to the community and we are honored that our efforts have been recognized on a national level by an outside organization.”

The recognition of “Best Places for Maternity” comes as Mount Nittany Health prepares to open the expanded Joseph V. and Suzanne Paterno Women and Children’s Services Unit in March. The largest unit of its kind in the region, the opening is the culmination of a 5-year plan that will double its current footprint. Renovations include six new labor and delivery rooms, two triage rooms, an advanced technology surgical suite, eleven post-partum rooms, two waiting areas, a nursery suite, a special lactation consulting area, family support areas and clinical offices.

Mount Nittany Medical Center’s exceptional care of babies and their families starts with care provided by our highly-skilled OB/GYN physicians at Mount Nittany Physician Group. You can also learn more about inpatient maternity care at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

The “Best Places for Maternity” honor is just one recognition of Mount Nittany Medical’s Center excellence in patient care. The Medical Center was also named a “World’s Best Hospital” by Newsweek in 2021 and earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for quality care and patient safety. Mount Nittany Medical Center is also a 5-Star rated hospital by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
