Association of screen time and depression in adolescence

According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, more than one in seven teens experience depression each year. How can parents take preventive measures to help their teens combat depression? According to a recent article published by JAMA Pediatrics, they should take into account how much time their teen spends in front of digital screens (ie, screen time).

Using an annual survey, researchers performed a study that assessed connections between screen time and depression over the course of four years for 3,826 adolescents. They broke down screen time into four categories: social media, television, computers and video games.

The study found that for every increased hour spent on social media, adolescents showed a sizeable increase in depressive symptoms, with similar findings for television and computer use. Researchers believe this is due to the social comparison that occurs when teens view the lives of others as being better.

Heatstroke prevention and car safety

The dog days of summer are upon us, which reminds us that heatstroke prevention is more important than ever.

On average, 38 children die in hot cars across the United States each year. Together we can prevent these tragedies from happening. In recognition of Heatstroke Awareness Day on July 31, below are tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  • Look before you lock. Get into the routine of always checking the back seat of your vehicle before you lock it and walk away.
  • A gentle reminder. Keep a stuffed animal or other memento in your child’s car seat when it’s empty, and move it to the front seat as a visual reminder when your child is in the back seat. Or place your phone, briefcase or purse in the back seat when traveling with your child.
