Following participation in the Health Career Exploration experience, the student will be able to:
- State the purpose and function of various Medical Center departments.
- Interact with multiple healthcare professionals and list their primary job responsibilities.
- Discuss educational requirements of various healthcare careers.
Eligible participants: Students currently enrolled in high school (11th and 12th grade) or college
Students participating in the program will follow the pathway of a hypothetical patient based on a medical condition. There are typically five patient pathway choices available for participants: behavioral health, pediatric asthma, obstetrical, surgical, and critical care. Each pathway will lead the participant through approximately seven departments involved in the care of the patient
Students will get a “behind the scenes” look into healthcare as personnel speak about their departments and role in patient care at the medical center. Discussion will also include health career options available in those departments along with training/education requirements and career preparation. Tours and observation of patient care areas will be permitted only in situations that do not interfere with patient care or patient privacy. During the experience, students are encouraged to ask questions about patient care or career options.
