New treatment for chronic shoulder pain patients

Jennifer Gilbert, DO, Mount Nittany Physician Group Pain Management

About one in four adults suffer from chronic shoulder pain. While treatments are available (e.g., surgery, physical therapy and medication), for some patients, the pain does not subside and makes everyday tasks excruciatingly difficult.

Mount Nittany Health’s Pain Management Center, located at Mount Nittany Health – Blue Course Drive, is pleased to offer a new treatment for patients experiencing chronic shoulder pain and for whom surgery, medication and/or physical therapy have not helped. Using radiofrequency nerve ablation, Jennifer Gilbert, DO, Mount Nittany Physician Group Pain Management, is able to stop pain right at the source (in the nerves).

Benefits of this procedure include the following:

  • Minimally invasive
  • No downtime
  • Non-opioid option
  • In-office treatment
  • Results lasting up to 6-12 months (can be repeated if needed)

Currently, the procedure is only covered by Medicare. However, that could soon change as more patients experience positive outcomes from the treatment. “While the treatment itself – radiofrequency ablation—is not new, the practice of using it for these types of patients is a new service we are very excited to offer. We have seen amazing results with this treatment, right here in the office,” says Dr. Gilbert.
