New service offered

We are now offering a new service at Mount Nittany Physician Group Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgery! Intense pulsed light treatment, often abbreviated IPL, uses specific wavelengths of light to treat various skin problems and unwanted dark hair. Specific problems that can be treated with IPL include:

  • Brown skin pigmentation, such as "age spots"
  • Facial spider veins
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Unwanted hair

Patients are initially scheduled for a consultation with Emily Peterson, MD, plastic surgeon, to determine if their concerns may be addressed with IPL treatment. At that time, we will be able to give an estimate as to how many treatments will be needed to achieve the desired results. Prior to treatment, patients need to refrain from sun exposure for approximately four weeks. Also, we recommend stopping the use of retinol products to the treatment area. Certain medications may also interfere with IPL therapy. We ask that you fill out a medical questionnaire at the time of your consult to determine if you are a good candidate.

During the treatment session, you will wear protective goggles to cover your eyes from the flashing light. When the IPL is in use, you may experience a mild stinging sensation. After the session, the treated skin may show some mild redness or swelling, generally resolving after a few days. It is important to use sunscreen over the treated area, even during the winter months. Depending on the problem being treated, it may take between two and six treatments to obtain the desired results. Please schedule a consult so we may discuss your treatment options. See you soon!
