Medical Center Golf Classic Celebrates 20th Anniversary, Raises More Than $103,000 for Cancer Pavilion

On Saturday, August 21, The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center held its 20th anniversary Golf Classic at the Penn State Golf Courses. In the third year of its 5-year commitment to raise funds for a Cancer Pavilion at Mount Nittany Medical Center, the tournament raised more than $103,000 toward its $500,000 5-year goal. In three years, the tournament has raised more than $300,000 toward this goal.

At the event, the commitment of all participants was honored, but special to this year’s tournament was the celebration of those organizations and people who have been with the tournament since its inception. Fred Carlin, OD, outgoing chair, was honored for his 10-year commitment as chair of the committee as well as Gene Stocker, Jr., Ralph Brower, Rob Schmidt and Jack Purnell, MD, who were honored for 20 years of service on the golf committee. Balfurd, Centre Medical and Surgical Associates, P.C., and Stocker Chevrolet were honored as 20-year sponsors of the event.

Over the past 20-years , the tournament has raised close to $1.4 million to support critical programs and equipment purchases at Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Unique to the Medical Center Golf Classic is the cash or car giveaway to one lucky golfer. This year’s winner was Roger Shenk. Shenk chose the $10,000 cash prize over the car, and donated $2,000 of those winnings back to The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center, and also made gifts to 2 other local charities. Last year’s winner, Dr. Aaron Bleznak, also gave a portion of the winnings back to The Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center.
