Medical Center enhances cancer care with additional technology

Mount Nittany Medical Center recently added a second intensity modulated linear accelerator to its Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion. This advanced technology – now available to patients – is designed to allow physicians the ability to program delivery of exact forms of radiation faster than other delivery systems, pinpointing radiation to the tumor and preserving healthy tissue. The Varian TrueBeam™ joins the existing Varian Trilogy® linear accelerator. These high-precision radiotherapy machines bring Mount Nittany Health to the forefront in the fight against cancer.

Designed from the ground up to treat moving targets with advanced speed and accuracy, the TrueBeam platform is a fully integrated system for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery. TrueBeam treats cancer anywhere in the body where radiation treatment is indicated, including the lung, breast, prostate and brain.

The additional machine is made possible, in part, by a generous lead gift of longtime supporters of the Mount Nittany Health Foundation, Lance and Ellen Shaner. In 2012, with a substantial gift from the Shaners, the Medical Center opened the Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion on its campus. Funds have also been garnered from the 2015 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic event, as well as, from a number of individual community supporters.

Veeral Patel, MD, a radiation oncologist in the Mount Nittany Physician Group, explains that having a second machine allows the radiation oncology department to double its cancer-fighting capabilities, supporting additional patients when required. A second linear accelerator also allows for more patient convenience and flexibility. “Cancer is a diagnosis no one wants to receive, and the stressors that come from coping with the uncertainty of future health only add to the strain,” says Dr. Patel. “Our mission is to provide a stress-free and caring environment for our patients so they can focus on themselves and not worry about issues regarding their treatment.”

The cancer treatment services at Mount Nittany Medical Center are among the most advanced, precise and versatile cancer-fighting technologies available.
