Matters of the Heart Draws More Than 300 for Evening of Heart-Health Education and Fun

On February 22, “Matters of the Heart: A Conversation about Women’s Heart Health” was presented to a packed Galen and Nancy Dreibelbis Auditorium at Mount Nittany Medical Center. The program – which featured interventional cardiologists Albert Zoda, MD, and Jeffrey Gilbert, DO from the Mount Nittany Physician Group – was enormously popular, with a second session added to accommodate overwhelming interest from the community.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and an estimated 325 attendees came to Mount Nittany on a frigid evening to learn about warning signs and symptoms, preventive tactics and healthy lifestyle choices from some of the leading local experts in the field. The presenters provided the crowd with a combination of important clinical and experiential information, and also engaged the crowd with humorous personal stories about family, friends and patients – all with the goal of sending attendees home with a renewed focus on helping them and their loved ones establish healthy lifestyle habits and other choices to reduce the risk of heart disease.

As an added attraction for the evening’s events, attendees were able to get a glimpse of celebrity dresses from the American Heart Association’s Heart Truth Collection. The dresses were worn by Jordin Sparks, Jennie Garth and Venus Williams to raise awareness of heart disease in women. A program sponsorship from HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital helped add this unique and entertaining element to an informative and educational discussion.

Due to the popularity of the event, plans are in the works for a follow-up presentation on this topic sometime later in 2011.
