Avoiding the Drive-thru: Quick and Healthy Foods

  • Turn a baked potato into dinner with black beans, salsa and an ounce of shredded pepper jack cheese. There are 12 grams of fiber, 12 grams of protein, one-third the fat of butter and more than 200 milligrams of calcium.

  • A quick spinach salad or pasta contains potassium, folic acid and some beta-carotene.

  • Snacks that combine carbohydrates with protein give a longer pick-me-up and keep weight down. Try apple slices and peanut butter, or low-fat cheese on whole-wheat crackers.

  • For an on-the-go snack, pack string cheese, a low-fat source of protein with few carbohydrates.
