Going Home

The day you bring home the newest member of your family is an exciting time, and we want to ensure that you feel prepared for this important step.

Parents leaving hospital with new baby.Checklist for discharge

  • Both the mother's doctor and the baby's doctor must write orders for discharge before the family can leave Mount Nittany Medical Center.
  • Make sure you have completed all of your paperwork before discharge (the birth certificate worksheet, shaken baby form and paternity paperwork if applicable). Get any prescriptions for new medications.
  • Enjoy your "special meal."
  • If blood test screening on the baby was not done earlier (the baby must be at least 24 hours old), it is done before discharge.
  • Extra personal belongings (flowers, gifts, etc.) should be taken to the car before discharge. Some items can be sent home the evening before discharge. Inform your nurse of the approximate time you'd like to be discharged the next day. Make sure you have your car seat in your hospital room and know how to use it.
  • Your nurse will explain the discharge instructions about caring for the mother and baby. After signing these instruction sheets, mothers are given a copy of each and a packet of information to help with continued recovery at home. The baby is identified by the numbered bracelet and the mother signs the footprint sheet.

When the mother is ready to leave, a nurse will arrange for an escort to take her and her baby to the front entrance by wheelchair.
