Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program. Medical Assistant certification required. Certification is required within 6 months from date of hire or transfer into the Medical Assistant position. CPR certification required. One year of medical office and patient care experience preferred. Knowledge of medical practice and patient care, medical equipment and instruments and examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of physician office procedures, medical terminology, ICD-9 and CPT coding guidelines. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions. Ability to assist in performing a variety of treatments and procedures, taking vital signs and recording and maintaining test results. Ability to record data accurately using a computer. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Primary Duties
Provide care to patients as directed by the physician, including preparing patients for examination, administering medications, assisting physicians with procedures and performing various tests. Prepare patients for examination and treatment including taking patient histories, vital signs and height and weight measurements. Assist physician with various tests and procedures. Administer non-controlled prescribed injections and medications, observe reactions and document in the patient’s file. Perform and document various tests and procedures including EKGs, audiometry, glucose testing and holter monitoring. Prepare exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments. Prepare, sterilize and maintain supplies and equipment for patient treatments. Answer and return telephone calls according to physician instructions and record messages for the physician (depending on specialty). Assist with scheduling patient referrals, appointments, testing and admission to other facilities. Call pharmacies with non-narcotic patient prescriptions, excluding controlled substances, according to the physician’s instructions. Perform front desk/administrative duties as required.
