What to do if you are alone and choking

Choking blocks the airway and can be extremely frightening to experience when alone. If you are alone and choking, follow these steps:

  • Do not panic
  • Attempt to cough forcefully, and continue doing so in an effort to expel the object
  • If you cannot speak but can still breathe, go outside and try to get the attention of another person
  • If the airway is completely blocked, give yourself the Heimlich maneuver
    - Deliver a series of abdominal thrusts, or bend your belly over a firm object like the back of a chair and thrust yourself into it
