Choking blocks the airway and can be extremely frightening to experience when alone. If you are alone and choking, follow these steps:
- Do not panic
- Attempt to cough forcefully, and continue doing so in an effort to expel the object
- If you cannot speak but can still breathe, go outside and try to get the attention of another person
- If the airway is completely blocked, give yourself the Heimlich maneuver
- Deliver a series of abdominal thrusts, or bend your belly over a firm object like the back of a chair and thrust yourself into it
