The need to donate blood and platelets before the end of summer

The need for blood and platelet donations is constant throughout the year. Before you fall back into school and work routines, it’s important for those who are eligible to add donating blood and platelets to their end of summer to-do lists.

While thousands of people answered the call for blood and platelet donations issued by the American Red Cross earlier this summer, an urgent need remains for platelets and types O negative, A negative and B negative blood. Blood donations can be made every 56 days, so donors who gave in the first half of the summer may be eligible to give again now.

You can make a blood donation with the American Red Cross at Mount Nittany Medical Center’s upcoming blood drive on Tuesday, August 27, from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm. The blood drive will be held in conference rooms 1, 2 and 3 at the Medical Center.

When you donate with the Red Cross between August 26 and September 9, you could win one of five $1,000 American Express® gift cards.**

Each day the Red Cross needs 17,000 blood donations to meet the needs of patients at approximately 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country, including Mount Nittany Medical Center. Be sure to schedule your appointment today by calling 1.800.733.2767, or visit redcrossblood.org and click “Make a Blood Donation Appointment.” For more information about the American Red Cross Blood Drive at Mount Nittany Medical Center, visit mountnittany.org.
