Recent product recalls

Here are just a few of the recent product recalls announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. For the most up-to-date recall information, please visit cpsc.gov and click on the Recalls tab from the home page.

Name of product: Playmat Sets by Holgate Toys

Hazard: The wheels on the wooden vehicles can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Incidents/Injuries: Holgate Toys has received one report of the wheels detaching from the body of a vehicle. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The Wegmans Playmat Set includes a 24-inch by 30-inch cotton canvas playmat and four toy wooden vehicles. The toy vehicles include a blue car, a red “Wegmans” delivery van, a green “Wegmans” farm tractor and a yellow “School Bus.” The sets were sold in a yellow box measuring about 12” by 12” with “Wegmans Playmat Set,” an age label circle with “2+” and “Made in the USA” printed on the front of the box. The UPC Code 0 7789028735 4 is printed on the back of the box.  

Sold exclusively at: Wegmans

Manufactured in: United States

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the wooden vehicles away from young children and return to Wegmans Food Stores for a full refund. Consumers may also contact Holgate Toys for instructions on returning the vehicles to Holgate Toys.

Name of product: Light-Up Frogs and Ducks by Toysmith

Hazard: The metal conductor pin on the bottom of the toys can come out, posing a choking hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall includes light-up soft plastic toy frogs and ducks. The toys light up when the sensors on the bottom of the product are touched or placed in water. The frog comes in green and the ducks come in yellow, pink and clear. The toys are approximately 2.25” in length and 1.5” in height. There is a round tag attached to the product with the UPC number 2424 5159.

Sold exclusively at: Cost Plus World Market between July 2012 and December 2012 for around $3.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled products, take them away from children and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Name of product: Leisure Ways® Brands Kids Outdoor Furniture (Ladybug)

Hazard: The red surface paint on the furniture contains excessive levels of lead, a violation of the federal lead paint standard.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves red ladybug-themed kids’ metal-framed outdoor furniture sold under the Leisure Ways brand. The recalled items have large ladybug images on the fabric and include a camp chair, folding chair, moon chair, double-seat swing chair and patio set that includes two chairs, a table and an umbrella. A tracking label sewn into the seat of each chair includes the production date “December/2012” and the words, “Distributed by: Far East Brokers and Consultants, Inc.”

Sold at: Weis Markets, wholesale distributors, grocery and drug stores nationwide from January 2013 to May 2013 for between $10 and $50, depending on the item.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled outdoor furniture away from children, and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Name of product: Baby Einstein Musical Motion Activity Jumpers

Hazard: The “sun” toy attachment on the activity jumper can rebound with force and injure the infant, posing an impact hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 100 reports of incidents, including 61 injuries. Reported injuries include bruises, lacerations to the face, a chipped tooth to an adult and a lineal skull fracture to a 7-month-old boy. 

Description: This recall includes Baby Einstein Musical Motion Activity Jumpers with model number 90564. The model number can be found on a tag attached to the underside of the seat. These stationary activity centers have a support seat covered in blue fabric attached to a large white metal frame and include a variety of brightly colored toys surrounding the seat. The yellow sun toy is attached to the seat frame on a flexible stalk with either three or five brightly colored rings. A date code is located in the lower right corner of the sewn in label on the back of the blue seat pad. The following date codes, indicating a manufacture date prior to November 2011, are included in the recall: OD0, OE0, OF0, OG0, OH0, OI0, OJ0, OK0, OL0, OA1, OB1, OC1, OD1, OE1, OF1, OG1, OH1, OI1, OJ1 and OK1. 

Sold at: Target, Toys R Us and other retail stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com between May 2010 and May 2013 for about $90.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the product, and contact Kids II for a replacement toy attachment.

Name of product: Autumn Run Girls Gemma II Boots by Renaissance Imports

Hazard: An exposed staple in the sole of the boot presents a laceration hazard to the consumer.

Incidents/Injuries: Renaissance Imports has received one report of a consumer who was punctured by an exposed staple in the sole.

Description: This recall involves Autumn Run brand girls Gemma II style boots with SKU number 0529-02613-1050. The SKU number can be found on a tag which is located inside the shoe, on the inner side of the collar. The brown roper style boots were sold in girls sizes 5 to 11. A paisley-print fabric sash and a leather beaded strap are tied around the boot.

Sold exclusively at: Academy Sports + Outdoors stores nationwide and online at Academy.com between July 2012 and October 2012 for about $23.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled boots from children and inspect the boots for exposed staples. Instructions for inspecting the boots can be found online at renimp.com. Boots that are stamped “INSPECTED” on the reverse side of the inside label have been inspected for staples and are not included in this recall. Consumers can return recalled boots to any Academy Sports + Outdoors store for a full refund.
