Pink Zone proceeds will bring breast specimen imager to Mount Nittany

A record-breaking crowd of 13,849 fans, most of them dressed in bright pink t-shirts, were part of the "sea of pink" in the Bryce Jordan Center on Feb. 26 as the Big 10 Champion Lady Lions basketball team beat the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. As a special tribute, 500 breast cancer survivors were given recognition during the halftime show.

Although the total raised from the 2012 Pink Zone game has not been finalized, Mount Nittany's portion of the proceeds from this year's game will fund a breast specimen imager.

This device is dedicated to breast tissue imaging and will be located in the Medical Center's operating rooms. It will enable radiologists to read breast tissue images directly from the operating room, providing much more timely feedback to the surgeon while the patient is still in the OR. This in turn allows our healthcare team to achieve the most precise margins, especially important in lumpectomy procedures.

As the lead beneficiary from among a group of six - including Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, Lewistown Hospital and JC Blair Memorial Hospital - Mount Nittany Medical Center has received a total of $121,000 from the 2010 and 2011 Pink Zone events to fund the Lady Lions Resource Room in our under-construction Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion.

Mount Nittany Health System provided a $10,000 sponsorship to Pink Zone. Steve Brown, FACHE, president and CEO of Mount Nittany said, "It is an honor to be selected for a third year as a beneficiary of the Pink Zone. Please know how grateful we are to the Pink Zone board and Lady Lion Basketball for once again extending an opportunity to Mount Nittany Medical Center for this unique partnership. Your team's commitment to breast cancer awareness and celebration of survivorship has inspired us and we are proud to be a lead sponsor."

In addition to the $10,000 pledged by the Health System this year, 10 of Mount Nittany's departments organized their own fundraisers - raising over $12,000.

Mount Nittany is exceedingly grateful to the Pennsylvania Pink Zone, Coach Coquese Washington and the Big 10 Champion Lady Lions Basketball Team for choosing again to support Mount Nittany Health System, patients with cancer, and those who care about them.

The Foundation’s 21st Annual Golf Tournament raised $150,000 for the new Cancer Center.
