Mount Nittany Health presents The Weight of the Nation at the State Theatre in April

Like many physicians, Stephen Donelan, MD, nephrology, Mount Nittany Physician Group, has passions. After viewing the critically-acclaimed HBO documentary on obesity, The Weight of the Nation, he became passionate about finding a way to share the films with the people of Centre County.

This April, Dr. Donelan will realize this goal. Mount Nittany Health is presenting The Weight of the Nation at The State Theatre Tuesdays in April as a free community education series, complete with audience-led panel discussions.

The Weight of the Nation is a good place to begin a discussion to improve our home, workplace and community,” said Donelan, adding that the issues explained in the documentary are exactly what every doctor hopes to discuss with patients, including how carrying extra weight can impact heart health, increase the risk of diabetes, and contribute to a host of other health concerns.

As emcee for the series, Dr. Donelan welcomes panelists from Mount Nittany Physician Group and thought leaders from local government, community and University organizations and area businesses, to answer questions and foster discussion with the audience. “Audience participation is essential for opening up a community dialogue about this important topic,” said Dr. Donelan.

Each of the four films in The Weight of the Nation series features interviews with healthcare experts, research findings about the impact of obesity on our society and profiles of individuals and families struggling with obesity.

April 2: Consequences examines the scope of the obesity epidemic and explores the health consequences of being overweight.

April 9: Choices explores the biological factors that affect obesity along with the choices we can make to live healthier lives.

April 16: Children in Crisis talks about the real risks children face from carrying too much weight and introduces tools parents can use to help their kids live healthier lives.

April 23: Challenges looks at the severity and origins of the obesity epidemic, the challenges facing overweight people, and opportunities for communities to help fight the epidemic.

The Weight of the Nation is a production of the Institute of Medicine, in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, and in partnership with the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente. The program is meant to inform as well as inspire people to action.
