In this very special season of peace and devotion, and especially in the wake of such unthinkable tragedies like the recent school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, it gives me great comfort and hope to know there are still caring, giving, and good people all around us.
This past weekend, for instance, I was moved by the efforts of our Emergency Department employees, who came together with their children to decorate and distribute holiday cards to our patients. Even more moving than the gesture itself was the fact that it was organized by individuals who give back every day in their work. In doing so, these folks see some of the most devastating sides of illness and trauma. Still, they chose to volunteer their time - on their day off, at the busiest time of year - to teach their children about the importance of giving.
I truly believe that this spirit of selfless giving is the essence of the Holiday Season. After a year fraught with tragic headlines in our nation and our community, I'd like to take a moment to share with you, the members of our community, some other shining moments from the past year. I'm not sharing these to boast about our accomplishments, and this is by no means an exhaustive list. I simply want to remind our friends and neighbors that wonderful moments - and people - still happen everyday, all around us. These are some we remember, and cherish, most.
