Steven Resto, CRCST, Sterile Processing Technician, Mount Nittany Medical Center, is an essential member of this department who exemplifies Mount Nittany Health’s core value of respect. His commitment to excellence and his unwavering focus on providing high-quality care to our patients have made him a valuable asset to our organization. Steven consistently goes above and beyond in his role to ensure that the more than 120,000 medical instruments used annually at Mount Nittany Health are sterilized and prepared according to the highest standards of quality and safety. Last year, his efforts and the efforts of the Sterile Processing team led to a successful visit by The Joint Commission.

Consider the Sterile Processing team’s massive scope of work at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Each month, they sterilize more than 5,300 trays and 3,500 peel packs for planned and emergency surgeries. Each surgical tray typically holds between 11 to 43 different instruments, although they can have as many as 360 items. These instruments range from tiny screws to flexible endoscopes, each with its own cleaning procedure. It’s a big job—made bigger by an hour-long sterilization cycle, and a two-hour cooling process. Getting it right every time is essential for patient safety.
